Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello discusses gamer behavior

Electronic Arts Inc. reported fiscal third-quarter results on Monday. The company's forecast for the current quarter was below expectations, sending shares lower after hours. During a conference call with analysts, CEO John Riccitiello discussed gamer behavior and whether people are spending less time with video game consoles like the Wii, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

QUESTION: Regarding the overall industry weakness and some of the numbers you gave. Do you think this is really a cyclical issue? Or do you think gamers are starting to change their daily behaviors, getting distracted by mobile apps and all the new devices out there, and spending less time with game consoles?

ANSWER: First off, we do have data and research on the amount of time consumers are spending with games, and increasingly, they are spending more time with their console than they ever have before. I don't think it's a consumer behavior issue if it's anything at all. And I do think it's fair to characterize 2009 as being a consequence of relatively less powerful (game release) slate industrywide compared to 2008. As we look to 2010, there's nothing to suggest that consumers aren't going to continue to increase the use of their console.
